Salmonella – From Your Pet’s Food

Have you checked your pet’s food out recently?  Officials at the CDC have linked an outbreak of Salmonella infections to recalled pet food manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods. 14 people to date have been sickened from this latest outbreak.

The CDC has received reports of illnesses to date in nine states: Alabama, Connecticut, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.  Among the nine patients for which data was available, five required hospitalization for treatment of the this latest salmonella infection.

There have been more cases of salmonella in recent years.  Symptoms of this infection may include the following:

  • Diarrhea, without blood.
  • Headaches.
  • Stomach cramps.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Fever.
  • Dehydration

Be aware that the infection can spread from the intestines into the bloodstream.

How did consumer get the infection from their pet food? By not properly washing their hands from touching the pet food itself.  Always wash with warm water and soap and clean them for as long as it  takes to sing Happy Birthday twice.

Do You Eat Cookie Dough?

Do you eat your cookie dough as you are making cookies? Many people do especially this time of year. A new report shows there may be some awful germs lurking in ready-to-bake cookie dough.

Scientists concluded that raw, ready-to-bake cookie dough was what caused 77 people in 30 states to become ill, 35 of whom became so sick that they needed to be hospitalized.

They found e-coli to be the source and not just from eggs but from flour. Flour,  they explain, doesn’t go through the kind of special processing to kill off pathogens that ingredients like pasteurized eggs, molasses, sugar, baking soda, and margarine do.

So if you see cookie dough that is ready to bake do not eat until cooked! You can say the same for your own homemade cookie dough too.  Don’t let e-coli ruin your holidays from baking those holiday cookies this year.

New Grape Tomato Recall for Salmonella Possibility

There is a new grape tomato recall over the concern for salmonella.   Front Row Produce says it is recalling it’s grape tomatoes supplied by Rio Queen Citrus of Mission, Texas.

So far no reports of illness have been reported in this recent recall.  USA Today has a hotline number for Consumers with questions:  Front Row Produce at 314-241-4700.

There have been more cases this year of salmonella than in past years.

Again symptoms may include:
