New Sars Like Virus Hits in Saudi Arabi

A new strain of the Sars virus has arrived in Saudi Arabia killing 2 people. Sars first emerged in China back in 2002. WHO claims investigations were being conducted into the likely source of the infection, the method of exposure, and the possibility of human-to-human transmission of the new Sars like virus. The World Health Organization urged all its member states to continue surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections. They want to keep a close eye on this Sars like virus.

SARS if you don’t remember is short for Severe acute respiratory syndrome. It is a viral respiratory disease. 916 people died in 2002 from this fast moving virus. 50% of the deaths were those over the age of 65. The last infected Sars case in humans was in 2003.

Sars Like Virus Symptoms May Include:

  • Fever.
  • Cough.
  • Sore Throat.
  • Exhaustion.
  • Shortness of breath may occur in later stages.
Suspicion arises if a person has been in contact (sexual, casual or even tattoos) with someone else in the past 10 days with the Sars like virus. If one has traveled to areas where the virus has been is another cause for concern. You may remember a story we did on bats and the diseases they carry. Bats can also be carriers of the Sars like viruses.
Chest x-rays and laboratory tests are usually done to confirm if the cases are positive. White blood cells tend to be low if someone has come down with the respiratory virus. Antibiotics do not work on the Sars patients. Patients can take fever reducing medications along with supplemental oxygen and ventilation.

How to Avoid The Sars Like Virus

  • Avoid travelling to areas where the virus is confirmed.
  • Use of Quarantine. Keeping people away from those infected is a must.
  • Keep your immune system in tip top shape.
Do you know anyone that was affected by the Sars Virus in 2002-2003?
